Solar Panels in Lakeland, FL: 2026 Cost, Lakeland Electric Net Metering & Savings

Short answer

Lakeland is served mainly by Lakeland Electric. The 2025 EIA residential average for Florida was $0.152 per kWh. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.1 peak sun hours a day. Neither number is your tariff or a roof study. Statewide context is on the Florida solar page.

Lakeland and the bill

Lakeland Electric is a municipal utility. It is not TECO and it is not OUC. Customers a few miles away in unincorporated Polk County may be on a different company. The city utility's solar rules are the ones that apply inside its territory. Lakeland is an inland Polk County city. Cooling loads are serious. Coastal wind and salt are less of the story than they are in Clearwater, and the municipal utility is more of the story than people expect when they search 'Florida solar' and get an FPL article. Municipal tariffs can be simpler or stranger than investor-owned riders. Either way they are local. A statewide blog will not quote Lakeland Electric's current credit correctly for long, so this page does not try. The 2025 EIA residential average for Florida was 15.21 cents per kWh. That statewide figure is what our calculator uses. It is not the Lakeland Electric tariff. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.1 peak sun hours a day.

Export credits and any SREC or REC

Lakeland Electric serves Lakeland, and Florida does not have one export credit for the state. Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric, and municipal utilities such as OUC, JEA, Lakeland Electric, and the City of Tallahassee each publish their own rider. A neighboring city can be a different company. There is no Florida SREC price to put next to the bill. The proposal has to name the rider. Wind design follows the Florida Building Code and is stricter on exposed coasts than inland. An array is not a storm shelter and it is not an insurance promise.

Roofs, climate, permits, and HOAs

Single-family houses with asphalt shingles are the usual solar candidate. Some older roofs near downtown have more tree shade. Newer south-side subdivisions are more exposed and often easier to lay out. Mobile homes and rented roofs are poor candidates unless the owner of the structure is the customer. A Lakeland permit comes from the local building department, not from Lakeland Electric. An HOA can add its own review. This page does not quote a FL permit fee or an approval, because both depend on the address. Ask Lakeland Electric, or the installer, for the current interconnection rules in writing. Compare two cash prices. Do not compare a Lakeland Electric savings chart with a TECO chart from a Tampa bid.

Estimated cost range

Estimated cost range for Lakeland, labeled as an estimate and not a local quote: Berkeley Lab's August 2026 update put 2025 host-owned residential systems at about $3.60 per watt before incentives, about $3.00 per watt in the cash subset, and about $4.50 per watt in the loan subset. The median size in that set was 7.7 kW. Lakeland is about 5.1 peak sun hours a day, against about 5.2 statewide. The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

Lakeland questions

Is Lakeland Electric the same as Tampa Electric?

No. Lakeland Electric is the municipal utility. Tampa Electric is a different investor-owned company.

Is the sun much different from Orlando?

Our rounded figures are both about 5.1 peak sun hours. The utility and the roof matter more than that rounding.

What export rule should a Lakeland proposal name?

Name Lakeland Electric and the current rider or retail plan. Florida does not have one price that replaces the document on your bill. This page does not decide eligibility.

Is the Lakeland cost range a quote?

No. It applies Berkeley Lab's 2025 national medians, about $3.00, $3.60, and $4.50 per watt depending on the cash or loan subset, to illustrate a range. Your roof, the main panel, and the local permit can move it.

Does the federal tax credit apply to a new Lakeland system in 2026?

The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.
