Solar Panels in Fort Lauderdale, FL: 2026 Cost, Florida Power & Light Net Metering & Savings

Short answer

Fort Lauderdale is served mainly by Florida Power & Light (FPL). The 2025 EIA residential average for Florida was $0.152 per kWh. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.3 peak sun hours a day. Neither number is your tariff or a roof study. Statewide context is on the Florida solar page.

Fort Lauderdale and the bill

Fort Lauderdale and most of Broward are Florida Power & Light. The interconnection is an FPL process. City permitting is Fort Lauderdale's or the neighboring city's, which is a separate office from Miami-Dade. Fort Lauderdale's roofs sit in a coastal county with canals, older marinas neighborhoods, and large inland subdivisions. The solar resource matches Miami more than it matches Jacksonville. The permitting office does not. A contractor who knows Miami-Dade product approvals still has to pull a Broward permit. Canal-front homes sometimes have limited roof area relative to a high bill from a large house. That is a geometry problem, not a motivation problem. The 2025 EIA residential average for Florida was 15.21 cents per kWh. That statewide figure is what our calculator uses. It is not the Florida Power & Light tariff. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.3 peak sun hours a day.

Export credits and any SREC or REC

Florida Power & Light serves Fort Lauderdale, and Florida does not have one export credit for the state. Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric, and municipal utilities such as OUC, JEA, Lakeland Electric, and the City of Tallahassee each publish their own rider. A neighboring city can be a different company. There is no Florida SREC price to put next to the bill. The proposal has to name the rider. Wind design follows the Florida Building Code and is stricter on exposed coasts than inland. An array is not a storm shelter and it is not an insurance promise.

Roofs, climate, permits, and HOAs

Tile roofs and barrel tile are common. Some waterfront homes have complex roof planes that waste a lot of the square footage on hips and valleys. A simple 2,000-square-foot house inland may take a larger array than a bigger, cut-up roof on a canal. Ask for a layout drawing, not just a kilowatt number. A Fort Lauderdale permit comes from the local building department, not from Florida Power & Light. An HOA can add its own review. This page does not quote a FL permit fee or an approval, because both depend on the address. Insurance and wind design belong in the first meeting. So does shade from royal palms, which people underestimate. Compare at least two cash prices that both name FPL's current export treatment.

Estimated cost range

Estimated cost range for Fort Lauderdale, labeled as an estimate and not a local quote: Berkeley Lab's August 2026 update put 2025 host-owned residential systems at about $3.60 per watt before incentives, about $3.00 per watt in the cash subset, and about $4.50 per watt in the loan subset. The median size in that set was 7.7 kW. Fort Lauderdale is about 5.3 peak sun hours a day, against about 5.2 statewide. The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

Fort Lauderdale questions

Is Fort Lauderdale a different utility from Miami?

Both are typically FPL. Permits and wind-design paperwork are still local.

Will a complex roof kill the project?

It can shrink the array. A layout drawing tells you whether the simple planes are big enough to matter.

What export rule should a Fort Lauderdale proposal name?

Name Florida Power & Light and the current rider or retail plan. Florida does not have one price that replaces the document on your bill. This page does not decide eligibility.

Is the Fort Lauderdale cost range a quote?

No. It applies Berkeley Lab's 2025 national medians, about $3.00, $3.60, and $4.50 per watt depending on the cash or loan subset, to illustrate a range. Your roof, the main panel, and the local permit can move it.

Does the federal tax credit apply to a new Fort Lauderdale system in 2026?

The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.
