Solar Panels in Frederick, MD: 2026 Cost, Potomac Edison Net Metering & Savings

Short answer

Frederick is served mainly by Potomac Edison. The 2025 EIA residential average for Maryland was $0.195 per kWh. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 4.4 peak sun hours a day. Neither number is your tariff or a roof study. Statewide context is on the Maryland solar page.

Frederick and the bill

Potomac Edison serves Frederick and much of western Maryland. A commuter who shops in Frederick may still live on a BGE or Pepco bill. The bill wins. Frederick is west of the BGE core. The utility changes, and so does the winter weather, which is a bit colder than Baltimore. The solar resource is still a Mid-Atlantic number. Agricultural edges and newer subdivisions along Route 15 have simpler roofs than the historic downtown. Potomac Edison's tariff is not BGE's. The 2025 EIA residential average for Maryland was 19.53 cents per kWh. That statewide figure is what our calculator uses. It is not the Potomac Edison tariff. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 4.4 peak sun hours a day.

Export credits and any SREC or REC

Frederick follows Maryland's net-metering statute, then the rider of Potomac Edison. House Bill 1532 keeps the current program open only until a successor begins. The Public Service Commission notice says that successor framework is due by February 1, 2027 and the new program begins July 1, 2027, so current net metering closes to new customers by that date at the latest, and a capacity cap can close it sooner. Eligible systems placed in service from July 1, 2024 through January 1, 2028 can apply for Brighter Tomorrow certified SRECs, which count at 1.5 times for a supplier's compliance. On November 4, 2026, Flett Exchange showed a $58.50 sell-now quote for the 2025 and 2026 certified vintages. That quote moves, certification has megawatt caps and a PSC fee, and it is not income you are owed.

Roofs, climate, permits, and HOAs

Historic downtown roofs can be small. Suburban and exurban houses are the usual candidates. Some lots back up to woods. A Frederick permit comes from the local building department, not from Potomac Edison. An HOA can add its own review. This page does not quote a MD permit fee or an approval, because both depend on the address. Name Potomac Edison. Ask for the current Maryland rider that applies to that company. If the bid says BGE, it is the wrong utility.

Estimated cost range

Estimated cost range for Frederick, labeled as an estimate and not a local quote: Berkeley Lab's August 2026 update put 2025 host-owned residential systems at about $3.60 per watt before incentives, about $3.00 per watt in the cash subset, and about $4.50 per watt in the loan subset. The median size in that set was 7.7 kW. Frederick is about 4.4 peak sun hours a day, against about 4.3 statewide. The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

Frederick questions

Is Frederick on BGE?

Typically no. Potomac Edison serves Frederick. Confirm on the bill.

Does western Maryland get less sun?

Our rounded metro figure is about 4.4 peak sun hours, close to Baltimore. Shade and roof size matter more.

What export rule should a Frederick proposal name?

Name Potomac Edison and the current rider or retail plan. Maryland does not have one price that replaces the document on your bill. This page does not decide eligibility.

Is the Frederick cost range a quote?

No. It applies Berkeley Lab's 2025 national medians, about $3.00, $3.60, and $4.50 per watt depending on the cash or loan subset, to illustrate a range. Your roof, the main panel, and the local permit can move it.

Does the federal tax credit apply to a new Frederick system in 2026?

The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

I'd like to thank Scott Schwarz for taking the time to share Spartan X's personalized residential solar plan with my family and I last week. We were interested in learning more about the opportunity and he did a terrific job of explaining all the details. I really respect and appreciate Scott's courteous down to earth approach. He never made us feel pressured to make a decision right then and there. He was knowledgeable and very willing to listen to, and answer, questions. He's definitely a great Spartan X representative. Thanks again, Scott.
