Solar Panels in San Jose, CA: 2026 Cost, PG&E delivery Net Metering & Savings
Short answer
San Jose is served mainly by PG&E delivery, often with San Jose Clean Energy. The 2025 EIA residential average for California was $0.314 per kWh. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.1 peak sun hours a day. Neither number is your tariff or a roof study. Statewide context is on the California solar page.
San Jose and the bill
PG&E delivers electricity. San Jose Clean Energy supplies generation for many customers. Both names can appear. Interconnection is still a utility process you should see named in the contract. San Jose roofs are often unshaded suburban planes with high household usage and high PG&E rates. That is a real solar candidate. Net billing still cuts the value of midday exports. Generation from a CCA does not mean you can ignore PG&E delivery charges. Ask the installer to say which charges shrink and which stay. The 2025 EIA residential average for California was 31.35 cents per kWh. That statewide figure is what our calculator uses. It is not the PG&E delivery tariff. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.1 peak sun hours a day.
Export credits and any SREC or REC
PG&E delivery serves San Jose. For a new interconnection at PG&E, Southern California Edison, or SDG&E, the net billing tariff replaced classic full-retail net metering. Exports are compensated on an avoided-cost basis that varies by hour, which is why a battery shows up in so many California proposals. Community choice aggregators sit on top of delivery and do not erase the delivery utility's interconnection rules. This page does not quote an export cent. Self-consumption is worth more, on that tariff, than a chart that prices every kilowatt-hour at retail.
Roofs, climate, permits, and HOAs
Single-family tracts from several decades dominate. Electrical panels in older Eichler and ranch neighborhoods may need an upgrade. Newer east-side houses often do not. The bid should say which. A San Jose permit comes from the local building department, not from PG&E delivery. An HOA can add its own review. This page does not quote a CA permit fee or an approval, because both depend on the address. Get the net billing assumption in writing. Ask whether the CCA's generation rate or PG&E's delivery rate was used in the savings chart. Those are different lines on the bill.
Estimated cost range
Estimated cost range for San Jose, labeled as an estimate and not a local quote: Berkeley Lab's August 2026 update put 2025 host-owned residential systems at about $3.60 per watt before incentives, about $3.00 per watt in the cash subset, and about $4.50 per watt in the loan subset. The median size in that set was 7.7 kW. San Jose is about 5.1 peak sun hours a day, against about 5.5 statewide. The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

San Jose questions
Is San Jose Clean Energy the same as PG&E?
No. It is a community choice supplier. PG&E typically still delivers the power and handles the wires.
Does a CCA restore full retail net metering?
Do not assume that. Ask for the current export treatment in writing.
What export rule should a San Jose proposal name?
Name PG&E delivery and the current rider or retail plan. California does not have one price that replaces the document on your bill. This page does not decide eligibility.
Is the San Jose cost range a quote?
No. It applies Berkeley Lab's 2025 national medians, about $3.00, $3.60, and $4.50 per watt depending on the cash or loan subset, to illustrate a range. Your roof, the main panel, and the local permit can move it.
Does the federal tax credit apply to a new San Jose system in 2026?
The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.
