Solar Panels in Dallas, TX: 2026 Cost, Oncor delivery Net Metering & Savings

Short answer

Dallas is served mainly by Oncor delivery, with a retail electric provider. The 2025 EIA residential average for Texas was $0.154 per kWh. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.0 peak sun hours a day. Neither number is your tariff or a roof study. Statewide context is on the Texas solar page.

Dallas and the bill

Oncor delivers electricity across most of Dallas. A retail electric provider sells the energy. Export payment lives in the retail plan. Oncor's delivery charges do not vanish because you added modules. Dallas production is better than Houston's on a clear annual basis, and hail is the local construction risk people underweight. A roof that has already been replaced for hail may be a fine solar roof. A roof that is due for a hail claim is a bad one to cover. Insurers in North Texas already argue about roofs. Adding an array gives them another document to ask for. Get that conversation done first. The 2025 EIA residential average for Texas was 15.40 cents per kWh. That statewide figure is what our calculator uses. It is not the Oncor delivery tariff. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 5.0 peak sun hours a day.

Export credits and any SREC or REC

Dallas is in competitive ERCOT territory for a typical address: Oncor delivery delivers the power, and a retail electric provider sells it. Any solar buyback is a term of that retail plan. It can end when the plan ends. That is not classic net metering, and it is not a 25-year assumption. Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso do not fit this sentence. This page does not quote a buyback cent. Ask the retailer, in writing, what they pay and for how many months.

Roofs, climate, permits, and HOAs

North Dallas, Oak Cliff, and the eastern suburbs are different roofs: mature trees versus open subdivision planes. Two-story houses often have a small south plane. The usable area, not the square footage of the house, sets the maximum system. A Dallas permit comes from the local building department, not from Oncor delivery. An HOA can add its own review. This page does not quote a TX permit fee or an approval, because both depend on the address. Price a reroof if the shingles are old. Ask for hail-conscious mounting and for the retail buyback in writing. Do not sign a 20-year loan against a 12-month electricity plan without seeing the renewal case.

Estimated cost range

Estimated cost range for Dallas, labeled as an estimate and not a local quote: Berkeley Lab's August 2026 update put 2025 host-owned residential systems at about $3.60 per watt before incentives, about $3.00 per watt in the cash subset, and about $4.50 per watt in the loan subset. The median size in that set was 7.7 kW. Dallas is about 5.0 peak sun hours a day, against about 5.3 statewide. The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

Dallas questions

Is Dallas on the same wires as Fort Worth?

Both are largely Oncor delivery territories. Your retail provider can still differ from your neighbor's.

Should hail change the decision?

Yes. If the roof is near replacement, do the roof first or include removal and reinstall in the price.

What export rule should a Dallas proposal name?

Name Oncor delivery and the current rider or retail plan. Texas does not have one price that replaces the document on your bill. This page does not decide eligibility.

Is the Dallas cost range a quote?

No. It applies Berkeley Lab's 2025 national medians, about $3.00, $3.60, and $4.50 per watt depending on the cash or loan subset, to illustrate a range. Your roof, the main panel, and the local permit can move it.

Does the federal tax credit apply to a new Dallas system in 2026?

The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.
