Solar Panels in Naperville, IL: 2026 Cost, Naperville's municipal e Net Metering & Savings
Short answer
Naperville is served mainly by Naperville's municipal electric utility for much of the city; ComEd in parts. The 2025 EIA residential average for Illinois was $0.177 per kWh. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 4.2 peak sun hours a day. Neither number is your tariff or a roof study. Statewide context is on the Illinois solar page.
Naperville and the bill
The City of Naperville Department of Public Utilities serves much of Naperville with municipal electric service. Some addresses at the edge are ComEd. The bill is the boundary. Illinois Shines net-metering notes for ComEd do not automatically describe the municipal tariff. Naperville looks like a ComEd suburb and often is not. The municipal utility sets its own solar rates. Treat a ComEd supply-only explanation as a hypothesis until the bill confirms ComEd. Roofs in newer subdivisions are simple. Older downtown-adjacent lots have more trees. Winter cloud cover matches the rest of the Chicago region. The 2025 EIA residential average for Illinois was 17.67 cents per kWh. That statewide figure is what our calculator uses. It is not the Naperville's municipal e tariff. A rounded solar resource for this metro is about 4.2 peak sun hours a day.
Export credits and any SREC or REC
Naperville is not automatically a ComEd Illinois Shines price. Much of Naperville is on the municipal utility, and parts of the area are ComEd. The 2026-27 published price for distributed generation up to 10 kW is about $80.77 per REC in ComEd (Group B) and about $70.37 in Ameren (Group A). Projects the Illinois Commerce Commission approves on or after June 1, 2026 receive 50 percent of that REC payment at energization and the rest over six years. A municipal bill does not inherit the ComEd disclosure. New ComEd residential customers are on supply-only net metering, so delivery charges still apply to power pulled from the grid.
Roofs, climate, permits, and HOAs
Detached two-story houses with hip roofs are common. South planes can be smaller than the floor plan suggests. HOAs often have a written solar process. A Naperville permit comes from the local building department, not from Naperville's municipal e. An HOA can add its own review. This page does not quote a IL permit fee or an approval, because both depend on the address. Read the utility name before comparing prices. Ask the municipal utility or ComEd, whichever is on the bill, for the current export rule. Do not assume Illinois Shines changes a municipal delivery charge.
Estimated cost range
Estimated cost range for Naperville, labeled as an estimate and not a local quote: Berkeley Lab's August 2026 update put 2025 host-owned residential systems at about $3.60 per watt before incentives, about $3.00 per watt in the cash subset, and about $4.50 per watt in the loan subset. The median size in that set was 7.7 kW. Naperville is about 4.2 peak sun hours a day, against about 4.2 statewide. The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.

Naperville questions
Is Naperville on ComEd?
Much of the city is municipal electric service. Some edges are ComEd. Read the bill.
Same sun as Chicago?
Yes at our rounded 4.2 peak sun hours. The utility is the difference.
What export rule should a Naperville proposal name?
Name Naperville's municipal e and the current rider or retail plan. Illinois does not have one price that replaces the document on your bill. This page does not decide eligibility.
Is the Naperville cost range a quote?
No. It applies Berkeley Lab's 2025 national medians, about $3.00, $3.60, and $4.50 per watt depending on the cash or loan subset, to illustrate a range. Your roof, the main panel, and the local permit can move it.
Does the federal tax credit apply to a new Naperville system in 2026?
The federal residential credit under 26 U.S.C. § 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats that expenditure as made when the original installation is completed.
